About Online Learning - Especially Maths.

Online tuition has been available for some time. Fast internet connections are now common and video conferencing software has improved significantly over the last 10 years or so. There are questions as to the effectiveness of online learning.

Advantages

The main advantage of remote working is that there is no travelling involved, so it is cheaper. A tutor is able to work for more hours and make it into a significant part-time job, which can then lead to more experience and the accumulation of more learning materials.

Not everybody wants a tutor to visit them at their house and students are often more comfortable working in their own home and workspace.

Learning materials that are in a digital format can easily be displayed on screen. This is quite powerful when working through past exam papers, or if there is a need to change the subject of a tutorial at short notice. Speaking personally, I have material from a range of textbooks covering the maths curriculum from years 7 to 11 as well as all the exam papers from the three main boards from 2017 onwards. Any of this can be broguht into the whiteboard as required.

Disadvantages

It is generally accepted that it is more effective to work with a student face-to-face, especially if a student is not very motivated.

Some concepts are difficult to explain over a remote connection, such as three dimensional representations and drawing constructions.

The tutor cannot see anything the student writes.

If the student has some material that needs to be shared on the whiteboard, they must get it to the tutor electronically, preferably in advance. If it is on their computer it can be screen shared within Zoom.

Is it Effective?

Yes - but not always. It is best if the student has the right equipment (a reasonable sized screen and a fast internet connection) and if the work can be targeted to cover weaker areas or to follow what is done in school. A regular tutorial session can be a very useful boost to a student's understanding, confidence in the subject, and exam technique.
